Construction workers may be exposed to many safety and health hazards while on the job site. These include chemical hazards, fire hazards, electrical hazards, confined space hazards, height hazards, etc.

Boilermaker

A Boilermaker is a true jack of all trades. They’re trained craft professionals who produce steel fabrications from plates and sections. The name originated from the repair and fabrication of boilers for ships and factories, but over the years this job has evolved to encompass all kinds of work associated with pressure vessels and boilers.

Carpenter

Carpenters cut, shape, and install building materials in order to construct and maintain office buildings, factories, and other structures. Carpenters working on commercial projects put up framing, drywall, insulation, flooring and roofing and may choose to involve themselves with cabinetry and interior trim work.

Concrete Finisher

Concrete Finishers pour, spread, smooth, and finish concrete in construction and engineering projects. Along with setting concrete forms, concrete finishers may be called in to repair and protect concrete surfaces.

The work can change from day to day and it is important that each laborer is physically strong, proficient with general hand and power tools, and capable of learning quickly.

Crane Operator

Mobile and Tower Crane Operators are needed on commercial and industrial construction projects to lift, move, and lower heavy loads. Some of the cranes that these operators control are capable of moving hundreds of thousands of pounds or more, so it is extremely important that every operator has good spatial judgement, a keen eye for hazards, and is an effective communicator.

Drywall and Ceiling Tile Installer

Buildings would not be complete without the work of Drywall and Ceiling Tile Installers. They install walls and ceilings and mount acoustical tiles or shock-absorbing materials, fireproofing, and insulation on walls and ceilings. Decorative trims and finishes are also often applied to the exterior and interior of buildings.

Electrician

Electricians install, operate, maintain, and repair electrical wiring and control systems in homes, commercial businesses, and industrial plants. Electricians may be responsible for wiring a home and installing lighting, running electric tests and inspections, or repairing generators and electronic controllers.

Fire Watch

Part of a welding team, workers on fire watch ensure no smoldering fires result from cutting or welding metal. A fire watch ensures that sparks, flames, and slag from hot work do not start a fire. Fire watch personnel have a basic understanding of fire and firefighting issues. If a fire breaks out, the fire watch's primary duty is to sound the alarm and control the fire if possible.

Glazier

Glaziers work with glass and glass substitutes to cut and install windows, skylights, walls, and other products. They work on projects big and small. Sometimes these craft professionals are installing and repairing windows in homes and storefronts. Other times, Glaziers are needed to build and complete huge commercial glass installations as well, such as the glass walls of skyscrapers.

Heavy Equipment Operator

Just like the name says, Heavy Equipment Operators control a variety of large, powerful machines on construction and engineering projects. They use equipment like bulldozers, excavators, graders, and concrete paving machines to prepare land. Heavy Equipment Operators are essential in the construction of buildings, bridges, roads and other structures.

HVAC Technician

HVAC Technicians work with electrical and mechanical components when they install, maintain, and repair heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. Some HVAC technicians choose to specialize in specific areas such as climate control, air quality and transfer, or even commercial refrigeration.

Industrial Maintenance E&I

Industrial Maintenance E&I Technicians install, repair and maintain electrical equipment and instrumentation. Industrial Maintenance E&I Technicians use a variety of tools and must be able to troubleshoot issues as well as read blueprints.

Instrument Fitters install instruments used in industrial and manufacturing facilities to control, monitor, record and measure processes and systems.

Instrument Technician

Instrument Technicians assemble, calibrate, and maintain instruments used in industrial and manufacturing facilities to control, monitor record, and measure processes and systems.

Mason

Masons use brick, stone, and concrete blocks to piece together durable structures and surfaces. Masonry is an ancient art, but advances in technology have maintained the trade as one of the most effective ways to build highly resilient and aesthetically pleasing structures.

Mechanical Insulator

Mechanical Insulators install and repair insulation materials used in industrial facilities to cover pipes, process equipment, storage tanks, ducts and other mechanical systems. The insulation applied to these systems is crucial to efficiently maintaining temperatures, minimizing personnel exposure to temperature extremes, and cutting down on noise.

Millwright

Simply put: Gas, oil, and other products can’t get from one place to another without the work of a Millwright. They install, align and level a wide range of heavy machinery like pumps and conveyor belts. Great precision is required for the job, including the ability to interpret layout plans and blueprints.

Painter

Painters use various techniques to apply paints, lacquers, and other coatings to buildings and industrial structures for decorative and protective purposes. Painters working on commercial projects paint and coat the interior and exterior walls of buildings and other structures.

Pipefitter

Pipefitters install, assemble, fabricate, maintain, repair and troubleshoot mechanical piping systems carrying fuel, chemicals, water, steam and air in heating, cooling, lubricating and various other process piping systems. Pipefitting demands a wide array of skills and knowledge to be able to safely monitor and maintain high pressure piping systems that often carry hazardous materials.

Plumber

Plumbers design, install, and maintain piping systems. Plumbers have many opportunities to work on water distribution systems, waste water disposal systems, and more specialized piping systems as professional experience is gained.

Quality Control Specialist

Quality Control Specialists ensure all construction performed is up to company standards and in compliance with the law. They also perform quality-related tests to ensure products comply with company and legal standards. Quality control specialists need to possess strong communications skills to relay important quality control concepts to technical and non-technical professionals.

Rigger

Riggers are problem solvers. They inspect and attach the rigging used on cranes and other specialized lifting equipment to move large and heavy loads. Riggers have to figure out which equipment is going to work for lifting huge items, including industrial towers. There’s no room for mistakes.

Sprinkler Fitter

Sprinkler Fitters install, repair, and maintain pipes, fixtures, and fittings to ensure operable fire prevention systems for buildings. Sprinkler systems installed by sprinkler fitters can include the underground supply as well as integrated overhead piping systems and standpipes.

Structural Ironworker

Structural Ironworkers erect structures and frameworks made of steel and iron.
