Snapshots of 2017 NCC: Interviews with Competition Project Managers [VIDEO]

Michael Villar of Repcon, an industrial services company, was the Pipefitting Competition project manager. Competitors in pipefitting had two separate tasksto complete, so half of the group worked to build a threaded pipe spool for three hours while the other half completed a welding project, and the two groups switched tasks after the lunch break. The tasks required the competitors to read a plan, gather the materials needed, measure and cut, thread, and assemble according to exact dimensions and orientation.
Construction is More Than High Salaries

For as high as these salaries are, the reality is that what skilled craft professionals earn is typically far greater. The salaries listed in NCCER’s survey are average base salaries, not including overtime, per diem, bonuses or other incentives. Construction is known for having plenty of overtime and travel opportunities as well as bonuses. Not to mention, many contractors also have incentives in which they pay for employee training, vacation time, retirement plans, cell phones, vehicle allowances and/or per diem or housing depending on the length of a project.
Skills Portion of National Craft Championships Officially Commences

The lunch whistle has sounded at ABC's 2015 National Craft Championship, signaling to craft professionals that it is time safely secure their workstations and proceed to lunch. This morning, a similar whistle sounded, signaling the beginning of the skills portion of the craft competition. Within moments, the quiet focus and anticipation felt in the Grand Hall was overcome by organized commotion. Saws began to buzz. Hammers went to work. The smell of fresh cut wood accompanied fleeting whiffs of welding fumes.

This year’s event will be no exception as participants network with their highly skilled, fellow craftspeople, meeting potential business partners, employers, and friends. Crafts at the event include Carpentry, Electrical, Fire Sprinkler, HVAC, Instrumentation Fitting, Insulation, Millwright, Pipefitting, Plumbing, Sheet Metal, and Welding.
CMEF Honors 44 Graduates with a Graduation Ceremony

Construction and Maintenance Education Foundation (CMEF), a training affiliate of the Associated Builders and Contractors of Greater Houston, honored 44 graduates in millwright, instrumentation, pipefitting, industrial painting and sheet metal at a graduation ceremony on Thursday, June 5. More than 200 people, including graduates, guests, instructors, managers, and industrial owners filled the banquet hall to applaud the students’ accomplishments.
