Boilermaker
A Boilermaker is a true jack of all trades. They’re trained craft professionals who produce steel fabrications from plates and sections. The name originated from the repair and fabrication of boilers for ships and factories, but over the years this job has evolved to encompass all kinds of work associated with pressure vessels and boilers. These jobs range from repairing, re-piping, and re-tubing commercial steam and hot water boilers to assembly and rework of pressure heaters and pressure vessels.

Construction is More Than High Salaries

For as high as these salaries are, the reality is that what skilled craft professionals earn is typically far greater. The salaries listed in NCCER’s survey are average base salaries, not including overtime, per diem, bonuses or other incentives. Construction is known for having plenty of overtime and travel opportunities as well as bonuses. Not to mention, many contractors also have incentives in which they pay for employee training, vacation time, retirement plans, cell phones, vehicle allowances and/or per diem or housing depending on the length of a project.
Performance Verification Center for Skilled Crafts Certification Unveiled in Houston Area

CMEF was created to use owner-allocated funds for craft certification, assessment, and training of the workers needed by first the industrial and now also the commercial construction industry. The new Performance Verification Center provides a controlled environment in which a craft professional's skills and ability are tested by a certified Performance Evaluator who verifies that he or she can safely and skillfully perform their chosen craft.

After working a few years as a helper, he learned that Jacobs sponsors their employees in continued education, so Sloan came to work for Jacobs 6½ years ago where he could further his training. Jacobs supported Sloan’s studies in pipefitting at Lee College, and in Electrical at San Jacinto College Central. He also participated in Jacobs’ Leadership Development Program, and plans to become Multi-Craft Certified.

White says he got into construction when he and his dad went to California to work in construction there. He began working as a union laborer and soon realized that he was making “pretty decent money.” A year later he was working as a carpenter building scaffolds. After a few years, White returned to Texas and worked for a company that sent him to take classes from the Construction and Maintenance Education Foundation (CMEF). That training allowed him to improve his skills as a pipefitter, and he went on to be promoted to a supervisor who was in charge of other pipefitters. He has been working at Force for the past four years.

At the Careers Expo that day the students were allowed to work on one of the mockups from the CMEF lab which is used to evaluate prospective journeyman pipefitters. Bolt said that what the students were experiencing that day was “a snapshot of what an industrial pipefitter does on the job.” The students were divided into two groups and asked to take apart the mockup and put it back together as quickly as possible while maintaining safety at all times. They were encouraged to work together, observing how the pieces came apart so that they could be reassembled correctly.
