Heavy Equipment Operator
Just like the name says, Heavy Equipment Operators control a variety of large, powerful machines on construction and engineering projects. They use equipment like bulldozers, excavators, graders, and concrete paving machines to prepare land. Heavy Equipment Operators are essential in the construction of buildings, bridges, roads and other structures. Oftentimes, heavy equipment operators will start off on lighter equipment such as lifts, skid-steer loaders, and aerial forklifts.

A longer-term solution is increased focus on certification and apprenticeship programs. At the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 450 office in Dayton, apprentices aged 18 to 52 receive three years of hands-on and classroom training for operating cranes and other heavy machinery. The program, free to applicants, is an earn-as-you-learn deal with some participants making $85,000 a year as part of their training, union spokesman Brandon Willis said.

It will educate the next generation of drivers, mechanics, welders, operators, and riggers on opportunities within the industry.
Construction is More Than High Salaries

For as high as these salaries are, the reality is that what skilled craft professionals earn is typically far greater. The salaries listed in NCCER’s survey are average base salaries, not including overtime, per diem, bonuses or other incentives. Construction is known for having plenty of overtime and travel opportunities as well as bonuses. Not to mention, many contractors also have incentives in which they pay for employee training, vacation time, retirement plans, cell phones, vehicle allowances and/or per diem or housing depending on the length of a project.

Lift & Move USA Careers Event to be Held in Houston

The second Lift & Move USA careers event will take place in Houston, Texas on February 10, 2016. The first event was held in June in Chicago, Illinois and attracted more than 140 attendees including students, apprentices and veterans, all interested in learning more about careers in the crane, rigging and specialized transport industry. The one-day event will feature speakers on a wide range of topics from an Industry Overview to How to Get a Job to Career Stories from craft professionals.

Komatsu, the Japanese builder, has produced autonomous vehicles for major mining and construction sites around the globe. Now, they are combining their autonomous vehicles with drones to become more productive and accurate in their site work. They use the drones to survey the site in less than a day where manual methods took as long as two weeks. Not only are the new technologies more productive, they are more accurate and able to eliminate the 20-30% errors found in the manual survey work that many of us grew up with.
