He explained that the plumbing competitors were each working individually to install the rough outline of a bathroom, including water closets, sinks, and floor drains. They were doing the reventing and the water piping. Prakke said they “will use all the different steps in plumbing that they use every day. For example they will be doing PVC, cast iron, copper – they will be soldering and brazing it as well as using the CPVC pipe.”
Construction is More Than High Salaries

For as high as these salaries are, the reality is that what skilled craft professionals earn is typically far greater. The salaries listed in NCCER’s survey are average base salaries, not including overtime, per diem, bonuses or other incentives. Construction is known for having plenty of overtime and travel opportunities as well as bonuses. Not to mention, many contractors also have incentives in which they pay for employee training, vacation time, retirement plans, cell phones, vehicle allowances and/or per diem or housing depending on the length of a project.
Houston Community College Offers a Quick Path to Success

The Construction Center of Excellence gives students a chance to quickly earn certificates and receive competency-based training. Associate degree programs are also available to support the growing need for electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, welders, industrial automation, pipefitting, stationary engineers, and general construction skills. The school provides training following “relevant industry skills standards and credentialing and supports customized training and partnership with regional employer organizations engaged in workforce development,” according to the school’s website.

“Nationwide, about 9,000 women plumbers, pipelayers, pipefitters and steamfitters comprise only 1.6 percent of the 564,000 workers in the field, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Although an American woman became a certified master plumber in 1951 – 64 years ago – the fields of plumbing and the other trades are still dominated by men."

Magic Camp: Mentoring a Girl in Construction exposed the girls to careers in several skilled trades including carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical. Representatives from heating and air conditioning giant TRANE brought equipment for demonstrations.
